Microwave Problems

Microwave/telephone problems? ?

My friend Breann Jorgensen and I talk on the phone a lot, but whenever her microwave is turned on (which is quite frequent) her voice turns all blurry! My phone does the same thing! They are both cordless phones, and distance doesn't seem to be a factor, as we can be anywhere in our house when this strange unexplained phenomenon happens! Somebody please explain what is happening!

  1. The micro wave frequency is interfering with the frequency being used by the cordless phones. The circuitry in most of these phones isn't particularly precise in narrowing the received transmission down to a specific frequency.
  2. You have at least one (or both) of 2 problems. 1) Conducted susceptibility/emissions traveling down the power line. Either the microwave is creating a whole ton of noise on the power line and the phone is picking it up, or the wall-wart for the phone is letting in a whole lot of noise. But it doubt this is your problem; there's lots of other stuff in the house that should make worse power line noise than a microwave, the worst being dimmer switches and electric motors with brushes. So the more likely choice is... 2) Microwave ovens work at 2.45 GHz, which is in the ISM band. I'm taking a wild guess here: your cordless phone is a "2.4 GHz" model. The microwave is leaking RF energy, and screwing up the receivers in the base station and handset. It may also your (and everybody else's) 802.11b/g/n wireless networking. My recommendation is that the microwave needs to be fixed or replaced.
  3. This is one of the reasons why older 900MHz cordless phones are better in many ways. No interference with microwave ovens or wi-fi networks. Probably the oven is emitting power in the same radio frequency band as your phone uses. You can solve this by relocating the oven and phone base station away from each other. The further the better. So get the phone base out o the kitchen and put it in the upstairs den or whatever, just get it far away.
