I have a microwave oven that is in working condition - What to do?
The thrift stores are not willing to take it. Thus far it seems the only option is to pay $20 (or more) to "dispose" it through an e-cycle program. Do you have any other recommendations on where to donate it? It is older, but a nice large countertop microwave oven in working condition. I just posted it on craigslist. Other ideas? We are in Livermore, CA. Thanks! I am looking for an ethical option for getting this microwave oven that we no longer have a need for out of our garage.

- if nobody on craigslist buys it, just go to a dumpster behind a best buy or other large store, and dump it there. if u get caught they wont care, and they recycle there electronics they dispose of anyway. and hey, you might find a perfectly good ipod :)
- I always donate to the churches in my neighborhood. They can give it to one of their members that need it. Good luck.
- I would use it to microwave stuff.
- If you have kids, check with the principal of their school, sometimes they know of a needy family that may need it.
- just use it yourself
- You have got to be kidding, right? You can't be serious! LOL! Okay then...there are homeless shelters, thrift stores, churches.... Are you REALLY serious?
- "Gr8Minds" is on the right track, suggesting you look at donation options, actively. My limited experiences in California suggest there are both public and privately-sponsored shelters/programs for homeless, for halfway-house teens, mothers, and substance abusers. Try the real Yellow Pages before the on-line version. If that does not yield a solution, call the municipal or county Social Services offices and explain your good intentions. Lastly, do NOT in desperation try to drop it into a super-store's dumpster. In many municipalities this is a violation of local codes, and you could find yourself paying a stiff fine for "illegal dumping." Good luck!
