Microwave Problems

How do you ship a microwave and TV from Vancouver to Calgary?

I am moving to Calgary for school and want to know the best way to ship my small appliances along with some clothes. I will probably go by West Jet or Greyhound so I can really only take two large suitcases which will hold my clothes. But how do I carry things like: alarm clock blender tv microwave any large clothes (winter jackets, etc.) If anyone knows ways to do this and/or approximate rates please let me know!

  1. 1. If you fly, you can take more than two bags if you pay. That might be the cheapest and/or most convenient. 2. If you take the bus, you pay $10 for the second bag and can't take more. 3. However, bus parcel express is a very good way to ship boxes and bags, and not very expensive. You can either collect the things at the Calgary bus terminal, or pay extra to have them delivered. Send them ahead of time, and maybe they'll be at the bus terminal when you arrive. 4. On the train, you can take three heavy bags/boxes for free, and pay a small amount for three more. 5. Do you have the original packing materials (foam and box) for your television and microwave? Everything else on your list could be adequately protected by getting some bubble wrap and then packing securely inside a box of clothes, but I don't think I'd try shipping a television and microwave without the original boxes and a bunch of Fragile stickers. Microwaves aren't very expensive - buy another one when you get there. 6. As for the television, think hard about whether you need it. Is it the right size for where you will be living? Will you need to store it in the summers or ship it back to Vancouver? What would a new or used one cost in Calgary (where there is no PST, by the way)? Can you find someone who is driving or paying movers who might have room for it, even if not right away? The only ways I would consider trying to move a television would be: in a car, by professional movers, or by a courier company who does the packing themselves.

  3. Honestly? Sell the microwave and television (unless the TV is some really expensive and fancy one). between the yahoo group called Vancouver Freecycle, craigslist and the multitide of thrift stores, finding new ones will be cheaper than shipping costs. but, if you are REALLY attached to them, pack them well and send them via Greyhound. Welcome to Vancouver!!!
